Effect of Ionic Strength of Nutrient Solution on the Growth and Fruit Yield in Hydroponically Grown Strawberry Plants

Abstract
To investigate the optimum ionic strength of nutrient solution for increasing growth and fruit yield, strawberry plants were grown hydroponically under 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75 and 2.0 strength of the balanced nutrient formula developed by Japanese Horticultural Experiment Station. The electrical conductivity (EC) fluctuation of each treatment solution was very small during the whole experimental period, but pH was decreased under 4.0 at higher ionic strength during the few weeks of the last experimental period. The vegetative growth was highest at 0.5-0.75 strength solution but that was restricted at 1.25-2.0 strength solution. And these plants grown with high ionic strength solution showed Ca deficiency in young leaves and brown coloured roots with stopping of quttation. There was no significant difference in soluble solid of fruit but the fruit number and yield were highest at 0.5 and 0.75 fold solution. On the other hand, as the ionic strength of nutrient solution increased, the dry matter partitioning in the crown and root also increased.
